The Upward Basketball season begins in January, and concludes in the middle of March. Registration opens in October. Practices for the 09/10 season begin the week of January 4th, with the first game on Saturday, January 16. The registration cost is $65 and includes an Upward t-shirt and reversible jersey. Optional matching reversible shorts are available for $15. There are separate boys and girls divisions starting at K5 through 8th grade.
practices and games
PRACTICES - Every team has one practice per week for one hour. Practices are held at local elementary schools and Walnut Creek Community Church (900 64th St, Des Moines). Practices are held Monday - Friday, starting as early as 4:30pm. When you attend one of the scheduled evaluations, you will fill out a practice availability form, informing us which days and times your child can practice. We do our best to accommodate busy schedules.
GAMES - Each team will have 8 games, starting on Saturday, January 16. Games are played on Saturdays and last approximately 60 minutes. The Kindergarten and 1st-2nd grade divisions play their games at Walnut Creek Community Church (900 64th St, Des Moines), while the 3rd - 4th, 5th - 6th grade, and the 7th - 8th grade divisions will play at Merrill Middle School (5301 Grand Ave, Des Moines). Starting with player introductions to the final horn, each game day is full of fun and excitement.
game format
Each game last approximate 60 minutes. There are two 18 minute halves, with a continuous clock. The clock will be stopped the last 1 minute of the 2nd half. Predetermined player substitutions occur every 6 minutes. Each player is allowed 2 fouls per 6 minute period. A 3rd foul whistled in a period will result on that player being substituted for the remaining minutes in that period. Man to man defense must be played at all times. There is no zone defense or full court defense allowed in Upward. A full list of Upward rules can be provided upon request.
